Серьезным достижением британской экономики является то, что весь производственный и потребительский сектора полностью обеспечены электроэнергией. 86 % электроэнергии производится тепловыми электростанциями, 12 % - атомными и 2 % - гидроэлектростанциями. Подавляющее число ТЭС работает на угле, однако в последние годы часть из них переходит на нефть. Наиболее крупные ТЭС (мощностью более 1 млн. кВт) находятся на реке Трент и около Лондона.

Гидростанции, как правило, небольшие, расположены они в основном на Шотландском нагорье.
