С провозглашением Эстонской республ

С провозглашением Эстонской республики 1918 года начинается новый этап развития музыкальной культуры этой страны. В 1919 году была открыта Таллиннская консерватория и высшее музыкальное училище в Тарту, создан союз эстонских певцов, который руководил проведением певческих праздников и издавал журнал "Muusikaleht". 
В 1924 году был создан оркестр эстонского радиовещания. Среди ведущих эстонских композиторов этого времени - А. Капп, Х. Эллер, Эдвард Тубин, Эвальд ААВ.
С завоеванием Эстонии Советским Союзом в 1940 году в Таллинне была открыта филармония, Дом народного творчества, эстонское отделение СК СССР , который возглавил Х. Эллер. В 1960-е - 1980-е годы наблюдается рост интереса эстонских композиторов к глубиннам национального фольклора, среди композиторов этого направления выделяется Вельйо Тормис.
