Парламент является высшим законодательным органом в Соединенном Королевстве и Королевских заморских территориях.
Парламент двухпалатный, включает верхнюю палату, называемую Палатой лордов, и нижнюю палату, называемую Палатой общин.
Палата лордов не избирается. Палата общин, напротив, демократически избираемая палата.
Большинство вопросов, касающихся выборов, регулируется Актом о народном представительстве (1983) с изменениями и дополнениями, внесенными законами о народном представительстве 1985 и 2000 годов.
Палата общин состоит из 650 депутатов.
Дата проведения выборов в Великобритании определяется премьер-министром. При этом законодательно устанавливается лишь срок деятельности палаты общин, который не может превышать пяти лет. Это означает, что премьер-министр может назначить новые парламентские выборы в любой момент в течение пяти лет, но не позднее этого срока.
Согласно традициям, премьер-министр на аудиенции у королевы Елизаветы Второй просит о роспуске парламента. Королева передает премьеру так называемую "королевскую декларацию", в которой указаны даты роспуска состава парламента, проведения выборов, а также дата начала работы нового состава парламента.
