Римский-Корсаков, Воин Андреевич.
русский мореплаватель, географ, гидрограф. Родился в старинной дворянской семье. В восемь лет был отдан в морское отделение Александровского корпуса в Царском Селе. В 1833 г. поступил в Морской кадетский корпус. Плавал гардемарином на фрегате “Прозерпина” на Балтике. По окончании корпуса служил мичманом на фрегате “Александр Невский”, затем на бриге “Патрокл”. В 1839 г. участвовал в описи побережья Финляндии. В период с 1843 по 1853 гг. служил лейтенантом, старшим офицером и командиром на различных российских судах.
В 1853 г. капитан-лейтенант В.А. Римский-Корсаков поступил в распоряжение адмирала Е. Путятина, отправлявшегося на фрегате “Паллада” и шхуне “Восток” к берегам Японии.
Произвел комплексные исследования острова Сахалин, уточнил его карту, установил наличие богатых залежей полезных ископаемых, собрал массу научных сведений о природе острова, его климате, образе жизни, быте, обычаях и обрядах коренных островитян. Провел гидрографические исследования Татарского пролива, прошел на корабле в Амурский лиман. Высказал в отчете свое мнение о перспективах и методах освоения природных богатств этого края и использования Амура в качестве транспортной магистрали.
По завершению столь же тщательного изучения Курильских островов и Камчатки В.А. Римский-Корсаков изложил в записке свои предложения по заселению восточных окраин России и развитию торговых и экономических связей между русским Дальним Востоком, Китаем, Японией и Америкой.
В дальнейшем, занимая командирские должности, В.А. Римский-Корсаков служил на Балтике. Занимался преподавательской деятельностью. В 1865 г. был произведен в контр-адмиралы и возглавил Морской корпус.
В 1871 году, вследствие ухудшившегося здоровья, Римский-Корсаков получил отпуск за границу и 4 ноября умер в городе Пиза, в Италии. Похоронен в Петербурге, на Смоленском кладбище.
