Первый Олимпийский хоккейный турнир прошёл с 23 апреля по 29 апреля 1920 года в столице Бельгии Антверпене, в рамках седьмых летних олимпийских игр. В 1982 году турнир был признан первым чемпионатом мира по хоккею с шайбой, когда федерации хоккея Канады и США были повторно приняты в Международную федерацию хоккея с шайбой
