Яркий представитель искусства барокко во фламандской живописи, Питер Пауль Рубенс (1577-1640) прославился как мифологическими и религиозными картинами, так и портретами.

На «Портрете Елены Фоурмен с двумя детьми» изображена вторая жена художника, ставшая его последней любовью и приходившаяся родной племянницей его первой супруге. На момент бракосочетания Рубенсу было 53 года, а Елене всего 16. Изображение молодой жены и детей - дочки Клер-Жанны и сына Франсуа - дышит безмятежным счастьем материнства. И мать, и дети полны естественной непринужденности.

Работа осталась неоконченной. По всей видимости, мастер начал писать руки третьего ребенка над сиденьем стула Елены, но по какой-то причине не завершил задуманного.
