Kruger National Park is the largest game reserve in South Africa and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It is also part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, which links three national parks across the boundaries of South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe allowing greater conservation of wildlife and plant life throughout the area.<br>The park was originally set up as a game reserve in the late 19th century in order to control hunting in the area. The size of the park was gradually expanded and it was first opened to the general public in 1927. It is now one of the largest national park in the world with six separate eco-system and a dazzling variety of wildlife, including the Big Five ( lion, African elephant, Cape Buffalo, leopard, rhinoceros) game animals. Along with the park's natural assets visitors can also find preserved Bushman rock paintings and impressive archeological sites, which show the cultures and events that have played a role in the park's history.<br>The park is also renowned as a world leader in advanced environmental management techniques and policies. Scientists from around the world regularly attend events and meetings held at the park to share their ideas about improving conservation.
