My native town is Tiraspol. It occupies the left bank of the river Dniester. It is often called a white-stone town or a sunny town. Tiraspol could hardly be called a very big city, but nevertheless it is the capital of Pridnestrovie and besides it has a great historical past.
The Town Tiraspol was founded by General Suvorov in 1792 to commemorate the victory of the Russian army over the Turkish in 1792. The name Tiraspol means “a town on the river Tiras”. “Tiras” is an ancient name of the Dniester and “polis” in Greek means “a town”.
The first dwellers of our town were people of different nationalities: Moldavians, Russians and Ukrainians. Nowadays it is also multinational city.
At the beginning of the century Tiraspol was a little dirty town with narrow streets and houses made of clay and straw. Since then the efforts of many generations of citizens have turned small town into a beautiful city.
Now it is a political, administrative, economic and cultural centre. Tiraspol has a great network of plants and factories producing different goods, which are well-known both at home and abroad. They are: textiles, clothes, machines, plastics, electrical appliances, footwear and wide range of tinned food.
Intellectual and cultural life is blooming in Tiraspol. It has University, several colleges, lyceums, gymnasiums which have close ties with the educational establishments of Russia, Moldova and the Ukraine. Besides we are proud of our State Drama Theatre, Art Gallery and nature museums.
